The Camp

The six daily sessions consist of three-and-a-half hours per day of instruction (1:00 to 4:30 pm), the faculty concert on Friday evening (6 pm), and the final student concert followed by a reception on Saturday. Note: During Week Two, Thursday, Friday, Saturday only, camp starts at 12:30 pm. Each day begins with the combined student and faculty string orchestra rehearsal. The student quartets then rehearse individually and receive coaching by members of the faculty. The location of the camp will be at the Pembroke Hill Upper School Campus on State Line Road.

15th Anniversary Celebration

KCSQP is proud to announce its 15th Anniversary! (1994 - 2008) We will celebrate the success of our Camp this summer with several significant events:

  • STUDENT ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM IN 1ST FACULTY CONCERT
  • MASTER CLASSES
  • GUEST LUTHIER PRESENTATION

Week One

  • Master classes: Throughout the week, select quartets will be coached by all faculty members observed by all students.
  • Faculty will choose at least one outstanding student ensemble to be featured during the Faculty performance, August 1, 6:00 PM at the Kauffman Foundation.
  • Special guest luthier will be in residence during Week One, details forthcoming.

Week Two

Tina Davidson

  • 2008 Tina Davidson Composer Residency. Highly regarded American composer, Davidson, creates “music that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply moving.” says the Star-Tribune of Minnesota. We recognize the importance of providing young music students the opportunity to work with a living composer, and are honored to have prominent American composer, Ms Davidson, at the Kansas City String Quartet Program™.
  • Students will work directly with Ms Davidson on her composition, learn about composing, and perform Paper, Glass, String, Wood in concert, August 9, 2:30 PM.

Eligibility

All middle and high school string players are eligible to apply, though we welcome serious students of all ages. Students already in string quartets are encouraged to audition as a quartet, with one movement of a string quartet of their choice. CDs or DVDs are accepted, but live audition is preferred. The quality of the recording must be on the best equipment that is possible. Check the quality of sound on the recording, if it is not clear, or if it is distorted, we have the right to reject the audition. Discs will not be returned.

Send CDs or DVDs to: Kansas City String Quartet Program, Artistic Director, 1215 W 64 Terr, Kansas City, MO 64113. Applications and $25 nonrefundable registration fee are due on May 2, 2008. Late discs and applications are not accepted.

Auditions

All applicants are required to audition. Auditions will be held on May 10, 2008 at Pembroke Hill's Lower School Wornall Road Campus. Each applicant will be notified by mail, e-mail or phone of the specific time and place.

Requirements for the audition:

All students must prepare one movement of a concerto or solo that best represents his or her ability

ALL APPLICANTS must also be prepared to play the following quartet excerpt with a faculty member:

Schedule
Week 1: July 28-August 2, 2008 (Sunghae Anna Lim in residence)
Week 2: August 4-August 9, 2008 (Andy Simionescu, Tina Davidson in residence)
Elizabeth Suh Lane, Paula Kosower, Peter Chun,Matthew Johnson in residence both weeks.

Fees
The camp fee will be $275 per week. A $25 nonrefundable registration fee is due along with completed registration by May 2, 2008. Balance of $250 is due by June 1, 2008. Please do not miss these deadlines — it hurts our ability to run a good program, and a late fee of $25 will be incurred.
